Jacqueline Asher for City Council

I want you to know about Jacqueline Asher, "Jac," who is running for City Council this fall. Emeryville's election is on November 8. I believe that Jacqueline will be a wonderful addition to the City Council as she is someone who pays close attention, puts forth new ideas, listens to others and is smart, insightful and passionate. I feel that she shares many perspectives and some qualities with me, and will be a collaborative, thoughtful, approachable and effective city council member.

Ballot Statement

Jacqueline Asher

Occupation: Educator

 

My family is proud to call Emeryville home. As a college instructor and parent, I am active in our community and committed to public service.

 

I am running for City Council to bring a fresh perspective to our city government. These are challenging times for cities, including ours, but I have a vision for a better Emeryville I believe we share and will work with you to achieve it.

 

As President of the non-profit Friends of the Emeryville Child Development Center, I recognize the importance of Emeryville’s strong partnership with our schools. We must encourage more families to become part of our community, and make sure we continue to serve those who are here.

 

As your Councilmember, I will work to provide needed services to our community, youth to seniors. I will pursue family-friendly housing, better pedestrian and bike access, well-maintained parks, locally-owned and neighborhood-serving businesses, and a continued commitment to the safety and security of our residents.

 

You can count on me to be accessible, effective, and committed to the future of Emeryville. Please join Councilmembers Ruth Atkin, Kurt Brinkman, Nora Davis, and Jennifer West and vote for me for City Council. Together we can make a difference for Emeryville!

Emeryville Center of Community Life Community Design Workshop 2

On Saturday, September 17, after you have recovered from the Coastal Clean-up all morning, head down to the ECCL Community Design workshop at Emery Secondary School's Atrium from 2:00 - 5:00pm. This is the second workshop for all stakeholders to add their voices to the plans for this joint project of the city and the school district.

The project is on a faster track to take advantage of additional grants that have been made available.

Coastal Clean-up, Saturday, Sept 17, 9-noon

Come out all Emeryville residents and workers to help improve the shoreline by picking up garbage. This annual event is always inspiring to me, and helps me to realize the importance of doing our part year round to make sure this kind of litter doesn't wash up on our shores. It is hard work, but gratifying when you read about the difference you can make, and how much garbage we collectively pick up every year! Think about inviting your neighbors to come and join you! Coming up, is the City of Emeryville's annual Coastal Clean Up event Saturday, September 17th, 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon, next to the Fire Station at 2333 Powell St.

Volunteers make this event a success.  Last year 180 volunteers collected 1755 lbs. of trash!  AND had FUN in the process!

This event is Emeryville's local contribution to the larger International Day of Coastal Clean up.  See more about the State and International event here:  http://www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/ccd/ccd.html

As in past years, volunteers will be treated to local donations such as coffee, breakfast and lunch finger foods, massage and raffle prizes.  Everyone receives a free raffle ticket!  Folkmanis has been very generous, donating special prizes for children who attend.

TEAMS are WELCOME!  Your company or (multi-tenant) property team can play a crucial role in making the event a success, by staffing organizing tables and materials, or by adopting your own clean-up area.  Let me know, in advance if you have a team and would like to serve in this way.  I will tour the site with your team captain to enhance clean-up efforts.

Help reduce waste.  PLEASE bring your own reusables:
-Collection bags or buckets (buckets are best)
-Gloves
-Refillable coffee cup & water bottle (this avoids creating more waste!)
-Hand rakes (combing sand & rocks for plastic pieces that are lethal to animals)

What you don't have, we will provide.

Wear sturdy shoes, sunscreen, hat and layers.

Posters (11" x 17", professional, artistic) are free to post in your building(s), whether you send a team or not. Reply here to arrange for delivery or pick-up.

p.s. I also serve on the Stopwaste.org board which helps all of Alameda County reduce waste. We are looking at supporting a ban on plastic bags in jurisdictions that are interested. I always hear about the large number of plastic bags that are picked up at coastal clean-up each year. Stay tuned for more info this fall... There will be a presentation at a city council meeting.

Park Ave. Celebration, Thursday, Sept 15 5:30-8:30pm

Emeryville has been working on sprucing up Park Ave. west of Hollis Street for the last several years. There has been a committee of residents, business owners and others who have overseen the beautification of this part of town. With new benches, landscaping, under-grounding of utility wires and street improvements, folks in that area are ready to celebrate the completion of this work with a Grand Opening at the plaza on the west end of Park Ave!
